Israeli PM dissolves committee to reform draft law

(AP) ? Israel's prime minister has dissolved a high-profile committee assigned to reform the country's military draft law to spread the burden among more sectors of society.

Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews are exempt from compulsory military service. Israel's Supreme Court recently ruled the current exemption system illegal and ordered the government to come up with an alternative by July 31.

Benjamin Netanyahu says the committee would not be able to compose legislation that would be approved by parliament. A key party quit the body after a proposal to require Israel's minority Arabs to do civilian service was softened.

In a statement Monday, Netanyahu said he was still committed to an "equal sharing of the burden."

The ultra-Orthodox claim they serve the state by serving God.
